Summertime = Extra Care For Our Four-Legged Family Members

by Nichole Chobin on June 24, 2011

Upon the arrival of the summer solstice, June 21st, comes warmer weather, summer storms and when it comes to our beloved four-legged family members…extra care.

In the summer, it is extraordinarily important to keep our four-legged family members hydrated and cool, free from ticks and fleas, as well as calm during those nasty summer storms.

Here are a few quick tips to aid in taking care of our beloved furry family members:

- One fantastic site to visit which can give excellent information on how to keep your dog/pet cool during those brutal summer days is the ASPCA . It encompasses, how to keep your four-legged family member hydrated, cool outside, exercised only during early morning hours or late evening, never leaving them in a parked car, and fashionable summer haircuts that can assist in the cooling process.
- Flea and tick control can be managed via Rx’s from your vet for items such as Frontline and PetArmor as well as other more holistic options such as an organic oil bath bar . Before making a decision, investigate into allergic reactions, your family pet’s overall health, and the recommendations of your veterinarian.
- Keeping animals calm during those wicked summer storms can sometimes be a daunting task. But here are a few sites and recommendations that may be useful. Showing them immense TLC during these difficult storms is key. This link gives specific criteria for doing just that. I also came upon a wonderful article that not only articulated directives and initiatives on keeping your dog calm during storms but even went as far as to suggest an item for purchase that may assist in the calming process . Although I haven’t used the “Anxiety Wrap” product, it does sound like a very interesting option for anyone faced with the ever pending dilemma of a brutal summer storm. There is nothing worse than being a pet parent and realizing that you can’t comfort, help, or ease your four-legged child’s pain during a storm.

In short, love and tenderness, knowing our pets needs and fears, as well as taking recommendations from the family vet can aid immensely in the healing and care taking process that we are responsible for as a pet parent.
